What is the "Thompson’s Test" used for?

  • Identify the presence of a complete Achilles rupture.

How to perform the "Thompson’s Test"?

  • Patient is prone , feet over the edge of the table, legs relaxed
  • Squeeze the affected gastrocnemius and soleus muscles

What is the positive result?

  • POSITIVE TEST: Absence of plantarflexion when the muscles are squeezed

  • Sensitivity: 96-100 %
  • Specificity: 93-100 %
