  • The log roll is the single most specific test for hip pain.
  • It moves the articular surface of the femoral head in relation to the acetabulum, with minimal stress on surrounding muscle or nerve.
    • The log roll test assesses for pathology within the hip joint.
    • It can be used to isolate the patient’s pathology to the hip as opposed to outside of the hip joint.

How to perform the "Log Roll Test"?

  • With the patient in a supine position, place one hand over the mid-thigh and passively externally and internally rotate the hip to the ends of its range of motion.
  • Compare the range of motion on both sides.

  • Pain: refers to intra-articular pathology.
