1. Metacarpophalangeal (MCP) Joint

Commonly known as your large knuckles, these joints connect your hand bones (metacarpals) to your finger bones (phalanges). Because of their ball-and-socket-like structure, they are the most versatile joints in your fingers.

  • Flexion (Bending): A healthy MCP joint can bend forward to roughly 100 degrees, allowing you to form a tight fist.
  • Abduction-Adduction (Spreading): These joints also allow you to spread your fingers apart and bring them back together, operating at a range of about 60 degrees.

2. Proximal Interphalangeal (PIP) Joint

The PIP joint is the middle knuckle of your finger. It acts as a strict hinge joint, meaning it only moves in two directions: bending and straightening. According to clinical data, the PIP joint is the single most crucial joint for functional grip strength.

  • Flexion (Bending): The PIP joint has the largest bending capacity of the finger knuckles, averaging a staggering 110 degrees of flexion.

3. Distal Interphalangeal (DIP) Joint

This is the small joint located right before your fingernail. While it is small, it plays a massive role in fine motor tasks, such as picking up a coin or pinching small objects.

  • Flexion (Bending): The DIP joint typically achieves up to 80 degrees of flexion.
