How to perform the "Biceps Femoris Reflex"?

  • Patient PositionProne with the knee flexed to approximately 20°
  • Position of ExaminerStanding next to the patient. The thumb is placed over the biceps femoris tendon just proximal to the joint line.
  • Evaluative Procedure: The thumb is tapped with a reflex hammer.

What is the positive result?

0 No reflex elicited
+1 Hyporeflexia: Reflex elicited with reinforcement (precontracting the muscle)
+2 Normal response
+3 Hyperreflexia (brisk)
+4 Hyperactive with clonus
