Arm Stopping Test

Used For

• Unilateral hemispheric lesion

How to Perform

• The patient holds both arms overhead or by his sides, the examiner holds his arms outstretched horizontally, and then the patient tries to quickly bring his arms up or down so that his fingertips are at the exact same level as the examiner’s.

Result

• With a unilateral hemispheric lesion, the good arm will stop on target, the affected arm often overshoots and then corrects in the opposite direction, oscillating around the target before eventually coming to rest.
