What is the “Rowe Test” used for?

  • Anterior shoulder Instability

How to perform the “Rowe Test”?

  • The patient lies supine and places the hand of the affected side behind his or her head. 
  • The examiner places one hand (clenched fist) against the posterior humeral head and pushes up while extending the arm slightly

What is the positive result?

  • If the patient appears to be apprehensive or in pain, a positive test for anterior instability is indicated. 
  • A clunk or grinding sound may indicate a torn anterior labrum
