Leg-Straightening Reflex

Leg Straightening Reflex

What is the “Leg-Straightening Reflex” used for?

  • This reflex is present at birth and normally disappears at approximately 4 months of age so that further motor development can occur.

How to perform the “Leg-Straightening Reflex”?

  • The infant is held upright in a standing position, with the examiner providing support under the axillae and around the chest.Ā
  • The soles of the infant’s feet are pressed to the table or ground several times.

What is the positive result?

  • When the support response is positive, the lower limbs and trunk will go into extension; the legs act as strong supporting pillars for weight bearing.Ā
  • If the reflex persists, reciprocal leg movements cannot appear and the infant will be unable to stand or walk.
